"There are many dangers associated with global warming. What's critical to understand is they often work together in ways that are genuinely alarming to contemplate. A near term, moderate rise in sea level of even a few feet, combined with a virtually instant increase in the intensity of hurricanes, both products of global warming, means that the deadly and destructive storm surges that accompany hurricanes would be greater and reach further inland. Gulf states, from Florida to Texas, would be especially vulnerable to this synergy. The Houston shipping channel, gulf energy platforms, the port of Miami; all could be knocked out of commission for months at time, or cease to exist. Imagine several million refugees fleeing a wrecked, inundated coastline at the same time a significant fraction of oil imports and other essential supplies are cut off, and you have some appreciation for the near term consequences of climate change. "Government sponsored research into alternative energy and greater fuel efficiency might just pay off in every way imaginable, even if the climate change worries are totally off the mark! Does it make sense to allow our entire economic fate to be held in the ruthless palm of the House of Saud and the bin Laden family, protecting their profits and keeping a tenuous hold on dwindling, finite supplies of oil half a world away with the blood of our youth and the treasure of our nation? Or might it make sense to lead the world in new technology and create jobs at home using a proven fusion of science, business, and policy? The former means preserving the status quo---along with permanent bases in Iraq and elsewhere for the next fifty years. More of the grim tragedy, never-ending expense, and unpredictable chaos we've seen far too much of for the last three years. The latter approach took us from Explorer 1 to the Sea of Tranquility in a decade. "The United States is, if anything, a science and technology nation. We can lick climate change and solve a bunch of other problems, if we make it a priority. And, if the party in power throws their arms up in the air whining "we can't", then maybe it's time for We the People to elect some leaders who can." |

BuzzFlash: If we go outside of the green zone, are there any people who support the American occupation? Nir Rosen: The Kurds definitely do, but they don’t see American troops in Kurdistan. The Kurds have it very well under their control. The Kurds would like to have American bases there. As for the rest of Iraq, the Arabs of Iraq -- very, very little support, and it’s dwindling. At some points in the beginning, you had Shias who wanted the Americans to stay for a few years. But as Shias have taken control of Iraq, they see no reason more and more for the Americans to be there. So you might start seeing a strange reversal of things. Sunnis are going to start wanting the Americans to stay because they’ll view the Americans in the same way -- as the only thing protecting them from being completely kicked out of Iraq. So I would say that most Iraqis want the Americans out. And many Iraqis are employed in some way by the Americans, meaning Iraqi business earned profits from the occupation. So they want the Americans to stay. But the Americans aren’t really doing anything positive right now. They’re just one more militia among the many militias there. One day they attack Shias, and Sunnis are celebrating. When the Americans attack Sunnis, Shias celebrate. What struck me in 2005, and in my last trip several weeks ago, was that, in Baghdad, you used to see the American occupation. You used to feel it. When you were stuck in traffic, there was an American tank next to you. There were American patrols walking the streets. There were American vehicles constantly on the streets. But now, you just don’t see that anymore. You might see the occasional American helicopter. Now what you see is this weird Iraqi occupation of Baghdad. The militias and security forces wear masks. They zoom through traffic. They point their machine guns at everybody. They’re shouting at the microphones. It’s much scarier -- this new domination of Iraq by weird, unnamed mass security forces. Americans just don’t really matter, I think. |
"I wouldn't call it fascism exactly, but a political system nominally controlled by an irresponsible, dumbed down electorate who are manipulated by dishonest, cynical, controlled mass media that dispense the propaganda of a corrupt political establishment can hardly be described as democracy either." - - - Edward Zehr |
"If we pull out, they'll follow us.... It doesn't matter where we go. This is a global conflict. We've seen them attack in London and Madrid and Casablanca and Istanbul and Mombasa and East Africa. They've been, on a global basis, involved in this conflict. And it will continue -- whether we complete the job or not in Iraq -- only it'll get worse. Iraq will become a safe haven for terrorists. They'll use it in order to launch attacks against our friends and allies in that part of the world. No matter how you carve it -- you can call it anything you want -- but basically, it is packing it in, going home, persuading and convincing and validating the theory that the Americans don't have the stomach for this fight." |
Hello out there in Blog-Land, I’m delighted to report that Assembly Joint Resolution 39 (AJR 39 -- my Resolution in the state legislature calling for the investigation and impeachment of Bush and Cheney) is alive. One of the great things that is keeping this bill alive is the phenomenal input and proactive emails, faxes, phone calls and letters of support my colleagues and I have received from so many of you. They have been eloquent, personal and brave. The constant theme has been a deeply held belief that we need to reclaim our nation’s government from the hands of the lawless – if it’s not already too late. None of this reaction is due to “main stream media” coverage, which has indeed been minimal. Instead, this is a great testimonial to the blogosphere and the power of your grass-roots activism, which reverberates every time you tell a friend, repost an announcement, or contact an elected official asking for their support. We now have a Joint Author on the bill, Mark Leno (D-San Francisco), and six terrific co-authors: Jackie Goldberg (D-Los Angeles), Mark Ridley-Thomas (D-Los Angeles), Jerome Horton (D-Los Angeles), Rudy Bermudez (D-Los Angeles), Ron Calderon (D-Los Angeles), and Loni Hancock (D-Alameda County). I believe it is my duty as a representative of the people, and the duty of all elected officials to help promote a public dialogue about things going on in the country that are just wrong, such as the dubious activities and errant judgment of the President and Vice President, because we can’t afford to turn a blind eye toward their ineptitude. For one reason or another, Congress has not sought to investigate these allegations. This is a matter that transcends partisan politics, and these are allegations that must not be ignored or swept under the rug any longer. President Bush and Vice President Cheney must be held accountable before they undertake even deadlier misdeeds, such as the use of nuclear weapons. We have all seen that there are no bounds to their willingness to ignore the Constitution and world opinion, that the unthinkable is routine in this Administration. People have been contacting me with great enthusiasm about the fact that we are finally standing up to this President and Vice President who consistently trample on the Constitution and believe they are above the law. Rather than fearing a backlash in the November elections, I feel that this will energize Democrats and others who have been frustrated by the lack of pushback to a President who has violated the Constitution and the checks and balances of our system with such impunity. In the State Assembly, however, there is still much to be done. A bit of progress has been made since I first submitted the amendments to AJR 39. Although I can't say that Assembly leadership is overly enthusiastic about moving the bill, it has been put into print. They have been particularly concerned about bi-partisan issues on the table in California, like the recently-passed infrastructure bond and the pending budget negotiations, and feel that impeachment is perceived as too partisan an issue to raise at this time. However, once our budget is passed, no impossible barrier remains in our way. The Resolution is now in the Rules Committee waiting for referral, hopefully to the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Pressure from constituents like you on Democratic Assemblymembers to not only support the bill, but also to become co-authors of the bill will be key to its success. We also need to push the Democratic leadership in the Assembly to refer the bill to committee and give it a hearing before the end of this legislative session in August. Its also important to let your representatives know that resolutions have also been introduced in Illinois and Vermont. Karen Yarbrough’s resolution in Illinois is done for the year as they are out of session. In Vermont, Dave Zuckerman’s Resolution has been referred to their Legislature’s Judiciary Committee, but its unclear whether the committee has heard the bill. Movement of my Resolution here in California could provide the impetus to not only moving Illinois’ and Vermont’s resolutions, but to also convince other states that introducing their own Resolutions would greatly enhance the cause. It will not be easy, but we can do it. Impeachment charges have never before been brought by a State legislature against a President and Vice-President, and our work will require the best efforts of a progressive grassroots movement to be successful. WE NEED YOUR HELP. For more information on how you can get involved, go to www.ImpeachCA.com. Thank you! Paul Koretz Assemblyman, 42nd District |
"Our president's illness, his need to beat his father, is driving this war more than any other factor, and it is getting worse. "We are facing a question of character here, one where we descend into the typical brutality of a colonial war, or of the Eastern Front, only to lose in the end. Are we going to hang Iraqis in town squares and burn their villages, murder whole families to keep the weak government in power? As if the resistance will react passively. "They mutliated, read as castrated, the soldiers they caught, then cut off their heads and then booby trapped the bodies. A horrible way to die. "Those who say we must now stay in Iraq are fools. People debating amnesty are wasting their time. An amnesty from a government which has no power means nothing "Iraq will have a civil war, kill many, many people and the hard men with guns will win. "We can never be as savage as people fighting an invader of their home. It is useless to even contemplate that." - - - Steve Gilliard |
"The US military presence in Iraq is retarding a political settlement. It makes the Shiites and Kurds cocky and unwilling to compromise with the Sunni Arabs. It keeps the Iraqi army weak and ineffective, lacking proper armor or an air force. And US military tactics of search and destroy are turning progressively more Iraqis against us over time. The longer the US stays in Iraq, the more likely it is that one day one of our cities will be attacked by Iraqi terrorists bearing a grudge for Fallujah or Tal Afar or whatever other Iraqi cities we plan to destroy." - - - - Juan Cole |
Shortly after the new president took office, an old veteran approached the White House from the park across Pennsylvania Ave. where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to the US Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush." The marine looked at the vet and said, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here." The old vet said, "Okay," and walked away. The following day, the same vet approached the White House and said to the same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush." The marine again told the vet, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer president and no longer resides here." The vet thanked him and, again, just walked away. The third day, the same vet approached the White House and spoke to the very same Marine saying, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush." The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the vet and said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row that you have been here asking to speak to Mr. Bush and I've already told you that Mr. Bush is no longer the president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?" The old vet looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just love hearing it." The marine snapped to attention, saluted and said, "See you tomorrow, Sir!" |
"How many times am I asked, 'Why vote if they’re going to steal the election?' That’s the point: Make them STEAL it. Make them know they can’t win UNLESS they steal it." - - - Greg Palast |
"Mass death on the installment plan. That's what this supplemental vote to keep our troops in Iraq is all about. "Today Iraqi civilian casualties number well over 100,000. Iraqi civilian injuries could be over one million, but who is keeping track? Some act as though the Iraqis are not real people, with real families, real hopes and real dreams and loves of their own. "We have lost nearly 2,500 of our own brave soldiers. Up to 48,000 troops have suffered physical or emotional injuries that could scar them and their loved ones for life. "Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Steiglitz says the war could cost $2 trillion dollars. Two trillion dollars for war while the American people are told we don't have enough money for job creation, education, health care and social security. "The Administration went into Iraq without an exit strategy not because they are incompetent, but because they have no intention of leaving. "We are spending hundreds of millions building permanent bases in Iraq. The Administration recently announced deployment of no less than 50,000 troops in Iraq far into the future. We are looking at the permanent occupation of Iraq. "And so the long cadence of lies has led to Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and Haditha, soon to be replaced by more lies and more tragedies. "What can you say when you are watching your nation descend, sleep walking, into something like the lower circles of hell in Dante's Inferno? "You can say stop it ! You can say enough blood is enough blood ! "You can stop it ! Bring our troops home ! "You can say no to any more funds for this war ! And then we can begin a period of truth and reconciliation about 9/11 and Iraq. Begin the healing of the soul of America. "The Bible says, 'He who troubleth his own house shall inherent the wind.' Our house has been troubled by this war based on lies. What will our inheritance be?" |
"Part of the reason why the GOP wins elections and the Democrats have their hopes dashed stems from the party’s failure to communicate effectively, its failure to target and get their voters to the polls, and its failure to counter the GOP’s disinformation and preemptive smear campaigns with effective and early messaging of its own. At this point, I have seen nothing from Rahm Emanuel or Chuck Schumer that indicates any of this will be fixed by Election Day, thereby relegating the Democrats to another night of disappointment in November if we simply count on our base to come out in greater numbers than a supposedly demoralized GOP base. The Republicans always seem to get their sheep to the polls to vote against their self-interest. What the Democrats need to do is use the anti-Bush anger of their base and marry it with an overall national message of eliminating the rubber-stamp Congress to get independents to come along with us this fall. - - - Steve Soto |

You tend to notice the big things in life... But the details aren't exactly your forte |
"War, under any circumstance, is not a 'core value' of humanity; in fact, it is the ultimate failure of humanity. War turns our mostly normal American youth into wanton murderers who have lost their own humanity and love of others. Haditha in this war and My Lai in another disgusting war were unfortunately not aberrations. War is the abominable aberration." - - - Cindy Sheehan |
....Peace candidate MARCY WINOGRAD is running to unseat pro-war Democrat Jane Harman in the 36th Congressional District primary on June 6. President of Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles and cofounder of the California Election Protection Network, Winograd is a teacher and grassroots activist who will vote to cut funding for the war in Iraq and bring the troops home, restore civil liberties denied under the Patriot Act, and redirect the war-billions into quality education and universal affordable single-payer health care. Her candidacy is endorsed by Jim Hightower, Daniel Ellsberg, Ron Kovic, Gore Vidal, Ed Asner, Cindy Sheehan, Scott Ritter, Ray McGovern, Robert Greenwald, Dolores Huerta, Ed Begley, Jr., Mike Farrell, Howard Zinn, Helen Caldicott, and many others.... |
"....crying wolf leads [in] the end to moral callousness, as people assume that there's no point in behaving morally when they're going to be called monsters anyway. This seems rather uncontroversially obvious to me." - - - Glenn Reynolds (a.k.a. "Instapundit") |
Right. So if you call me a thief then, because I have no moral fiber, I will immedately start stealing. Glenn, you're a doofus!
MESSAGE FROM RANDI [Rhodes] 06.02.2006 I used to say, "It's the hypocrisy." I was wrong. It's the LYING. Republicans said they were for fiscal responsibility and spend like there's no tomorrow. Maybe there isn't in these End Timers' world but in my kid's world, there are plenty of tomorrows. The treasury is empty, and we are competing with our own government to borrow money. That's why interest rates are going up. We're all broke now! Republicans said they were all about law and order but they commit so many crimes it's a full time job for me and most of our Federal Prosecutors just to keep up with the lawbreaking our government officials do. Republicans said they were the BEST on National Security, but with all the cuts to Homeland Security (especially to NYC and Washington DC) and the terrorist training ground/recruitment poster that is Iraq, I'd rather have a guard dog and a flashlight than these bastards. Republicans said they had the moral high ground. Abu Gharib? Haditha? Threatening Nuclear War? Do you think Iraqis care who kills them? Is there a difference between Saddam Hussein and George Bush when it comes to killing civilians by knocking down their doors and gunning down their babies? Is there a difference between Abu Gharib's torture chambers under the Bush Administration and Abu Gharib under Baathists? Hypocrisy just means you scold others for something you do. Lying means you cover up your hypocrisy. Any questions? Thanks for listening. Love ALLways, Randi |
This story really has stood out for me recently from filmgeek83 over at kos and I felt compelled to comment on it: "Something was leaking sulfur gas, and it smelled like rotten eggs." The rotten egg odor is Hydrogen Sulfide Gas (H2S). It's produced when organic material (basically shit, leaves, trash and such) has no Dissolved Oxygen (DO) in an aquatic environment (anaerobic conditions). In other words, there is not enough (flowing) water to break it down naturally without it setting off a nasty odor. It's dangerous because it dulls your sense of smell and higher concentrations aren't as noticeable. The gas is very poisonous to your respiratory system, it's explosive, flammable and colorless. He continues: "But really, it wasn't as bad as I'm sure you're picturing. We had a roof over our heads, the lake kept us relatively cool, and it was safe. I was as comfortable there as I could be." After a while, when you're in the military and in the field for a long stint you start to lose any semblance of being a kind human spirit. You really could care less about what is going on around you. You wake up follow orders, do your job and let the pieces fall where they lay. BTW, no matter what your military job is, you're a soldier first, it's kill or be killed and you're always packing! I love how he concludes his piece: "This is what a war of choice looks like, folks. We've seen it before. We should have been expecting this. Never again, Goddammit. Never again." Ah! The memories! Phil L. |
I certainly feel for anyone that loses his job but in this case the man really, really deserves it! Don't you think it would be fair that he lose his pension and possibly face some jail time also? "The 60-year old civil servant, a GS-14 employee who earns between $91,407 and $118,828 a year, has been notified that he will be terminated," VA officials said. "The employee violated department policy by taking home electronic files containing the names, birth dates and Social Security numbers of as many as 26.5 million veterans." The infamous Bush Administration continues to earn high praise in the public view. Now we have 26.5 million military Veterans ever vigilante. I continue to ask, "How many more Bush boners will the public put up with?" I wait on pins and needles now to see if and when my identity is stolen or the VA deposit does not go into my account. I feel comfortable knowing that the monarchy has my back and that, continuing from the article, "Veterans service organizations and some members of Congress had said they expect several employees and officials to resign or be fired if the department hopes to win back the trust of veterans." Ya Think!! Phil L. |
Well the weight of the world is FALLING And on my back I've been CRAWLING The state of affairs is APPALLING And the 6 o'clock news keeps CALLING Well I've been trying to see the world through their eyes Where black is white and day is night Left is Right Left is Right Left is Right, For me Well negotiations keep STALLING The United Nations keeps CALLING The Skeletons you're HAULING Won't hold when you're FALLING Put your head in the sand and you'll never know What's waiting for you in the depths below (below) Don't believe everything that you read Take what you want and keep what you need TWISTED NIXON |
