Bits and Pieces for the Week of September 7 - 13

Would you believe....... an Obama/Palin ticket? It could happen. (Mike)

Wow. At the rate Ike is growing, it looks like it may soon become as large as the Gulf of Mexico. (Mike)

"A pollster whose mathematical model has correctly predicted every winner of the White House popular vote since 1988 is banking on a decisive victory for Democrat Barack Obama in November." (7 of 6)

Iraq Cancels Six No-Bid Oil Contracts. Iraq’s oil minister, Hussain al-Shahristani, told reporters at an OPEC summit meeting in Vienna on Tuesday that talks with Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Shell, Total, BP and several smaller companies for one-year deals... had dragged on for so long that the companies could not now fulfill the work within that time frame. I wonder if al-Shahristani saw a short life span in the future if he went through with the oil deal? (7 of 6)

Senate Democrats on Joe Lieberman: Can't live with him, can't live without him (until January 2009). (Mike)

Why is McPalin criticizing Obama for getting earmarks for his state? He's not running his campaign on "no earmarks". Besides, "...Alaska under Palin's leadership has asked Washington for 10 times more money per citizen for pet projects." (7 of 6)

Why Obama will lose (Mike)

"The Fannie and Freddie bail-out: bad news for us all" (Mike)

Shhhh! Another Cholera outbreak in Iraq. (7 of 6)

I guess this how the GOP plans on winning this election! More states purging the voters rolls of minorities and people who have been foreclosed on. (7 of 6)

Went to see Babylon AD with my wife and boy yesterday... a couple in the row in front of us were talking.... the Woman says, "I had no idea this movie took place in the future." The Man replies, "Yeah, I guess McCain won the election!" The wife and I roared with laughter!! [BTW, not that good of movie] (7 of 6)

Memories of Neil Bu$h and the Silverado Savings and Loan failure. It only cost taxpayers 1 billion at the time! Silver State Bank In Nevada Fails. Andrew K. McCain, a son of Republican presidential nominee John McCain, sat on the boards of Silver State Bank and of its parent, Silver State Bancorp, starting in February but resigned in July citing "personal reasons," corporate filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission show. Andrew McCain also was a member of the bank's audit committee, responsible for oversight of the company's accounting. (7 of 6)

And so "a GOP sport" begins... Nearly 600,000 Subject to Possible Caging in Ohio. (7 of 6)

Regarding your polster who predicts winners of the popular vote: how well did he or she predict the Electoral College results? Remember, Gore got more votes than Bush in 2000 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_presidential_election,_2000)

All it says is:

Abramowitz said his model had correctly forecast the popular vote winner within two percentage points or less in every presidential election since 1988.

That includes the 2000 election, when Democrat Al Gore carried the popular vote. But Bush came ahead in the electoral college after his Supreme Court-mandated win in Florida.
