25 would be great but he doesn't even need to lose nearly that many. I know as a former soldier it's hard to get past the deaths that will occur between know and September. I understand that. And it might sound cavalier, or 'smug';), but it's a big ugly world and soldiers have been soldiering and dying for a long time, often for not very worthwhile reasons. And more will die in future engagements of, unfortunately, equally duboius worth. A lot of people are hoping for miracles. But miracles don't happen.
We had our Memorial Day parade in out town last evening. A good crowd turned out to see a rather brief parade on a beautiful early summer evening. All the local dignitaries were there of course. The local clubs, Elks, KofC, Girl/Boy Scouts. Remarkably few veterans. Maybe 6 of 7 WWII vets, 2 Vietnam vets and about a dozen active duty members of the various services. All received well deserved applause.
On the steps of the American Legion hall the politicos said their bit about honor and duty and service and freedom and sacrifice and renewal. Then a local son discharged from the Marines 9 months ago spoke briefly. I'd like to say he was a natural born speaker but he wasn't. He served in Iraq. He was clearly emotional as he spoke. The crux of what he said was this, "Regardless of what you think of the mission the best way to support the troops is to make sure that they have the best equipment available to keep themselves alive. He spoke about the Cougar MRAP vehicle which I was unfamiliar with but is apparently the replacement for the humvee in IED combat type situations. He wants more of them. Fast. There was an undertone of anger that not enough was being done by the powers that be in this regard but it remained below the surface. That was basically it. Another Army Ranger spoke about not forgetting the wounded and the veterans when they return home. Something I know you will appreciate SoS.
And just to note this; there was not a single mention of ending the occupation. Not a single mention of the merits of the conflict. Not a single mention of finding peaceful solutions to problems currently being address by force or threats of force. Perhaps Memorial Day is not the forum for such talk. But why not? Does honoring the dead mean by necessity romanticizing their deaths? It struck me as odd or ironic in a way. Perhaps just a bit sad.
But that was Memorial Day in my small New York town.

I can't agree more. We should expect no less from our politicians.

The wind power thing is a stupid sop to big energy for sure. The sponsor is from West Virginia. Can you say COAL? But the libsearthwatch site is guilty of a bit of hyperbole. It's not gonna make wind power generation a crime per se. It's gonna impose a bunch of regulations and make people register their turbines but it's not gonna outlaw ind power generation. It's bad legislation that needs to be stripped from the bill but as I said libearthwatch is not telling a straight story either.
It just that all the damn energy companies, water companies also for that matter, want to control who has what.
For instance here in AZ, we need all kinds of permits and such if we even want to explore having solar power. Then we have to get approval from our HOA to have the panels on our house. If I could just have solar power for heating my pool in the winter I'd be happy.
Government needs to make it easier for folks to have the ability to save money on those huge energy bills. Not make it tougher on them.

The reason they're throwing in all these regs is to make it so big energy/big business doesn't get chiselled out of the picture.
I think there needs to be consideration of sensitive environments and habitats but the way this bill is written is troubling.
