Steve Gilliard on why the increase in contributions by individuals to political campaigns is so important:
....When Al Gore ran in 2000, 150K people gave to him. Which was standard. Now, over a million people gave to John Kerry. A million people, most giving under a hundred dollars.
Why does that matter? Because it liberates politicians from lobbyists. When they know they can get money from people withoiut favors, it frees them to act in the public's interest. While lobbies will still have influence, this is a crucial step in reclaiming democracy from the Beltway Kool Kids Klub. If you want a free country, national health care and an end to the war in Iraq, then you'll need politicians who can say no and have the money to do so.... |
