Fun, What Fun?

I can't put my finger on it exactly but I'll try. I'm irritable, I'm sad, I'm depressed, no, that's not it, I'm really, really angry. Yesterday, was my regularly scheduled appointment to see my VA shrink and I didn't discuss with her what was bothering me. Maybe it's something only an ex-soldier feels, I don't know, but soldiers are still dying in Iraq.

Every day it's the endless stream of news, 3-4 troops a day, all for politician's lies. A fucking illegal war and the politician's lack of stopping it when we all know they have the power to do so. The frustration I feel makes me want to scream!

I'm a registered Democrat, albeit a Progressive Democrat because it is the lesser of evils for the United States. The Republi-cons and their radical brothers, the Christian Reich and Neo-cons, are the worst thing ever to happen to America in my opinion. One only has to google "PNAC" and look at the signers of their "Statement of Principles" to understand that these idiots have put our country in this perilous position of decay.

I had such high hopes for the new Democratically controlled Congress. I feel cheated. The constituency gave everything they had for the Dems to get the majority in both houses of Congress. Somehow they are still acting like a weak second banana to the more powerful Republi-cons. I just don't get it. As we say in spanglish, "Have some cajones", as you grab your crotch!

It appears that there are two major camps emerging from the Democratic party; the folks who feel that Congress playing it safe with their votes is good strategy for the '08' election; and folks like me who want the Dems to use their power to forcefully stand on their principles and fight against this fascist, murderous regime.

I've heard the arguments from my friends; wait, be patient, this is reality, we need 60 votes in the Senate, anything too drastic might upset the important vote in '08'. Fuck that! None of them seem to work for me. The Democratic Congress is still getting killed in the polls. And soldiers are still getting killed in Iraq.

The Democrats need to take the necessary steps to stop this war, NOW! Stay united against bu$h on all issues. The people elected the Dems for this reason. Anything less is complete capitulation. I'm confident that if the Democrats show some courage, stand up to the evil that is the bu$h cabal, the American people will have reason to follow them and continue to vote for the lesser of evils. I cannot think of a reason not too.

I digress. Yes, the Democrats come off looking weak in the media. The truth is the Dems are weak. The Democrats need their message to come across forcefully in the media. Who will step up and be the Democratic mouthpiece? If one of them would stop running for President and remind the media daily, hell, hourly, that the bu$h Administration and the Republi-cons who continue to support him are the problem, the rest of the American people might finally realize the Democrats have the country's best interest in mind.

I'm sure both camps of Democrats know everything can't be perfect. It's clear, however, that in order to win the hearts and minds of most Americans it's imperative that the Democrats must not simply tolerate or try and persevere against the bu$h/cheney crime family and their automatons, they need to squash them them at every angle.

This is what I should have discussed with my VA shrink yesterday. Instead, it was all about what I was doing for fun in my life. Who can think about fun when my brothers-in-arms are dying for the biggest crime in American history. And the Democratic congress can stop this crime, if only they had the "cajones"!

I don't know about the 'two camps' crap but if you need to simplify the vast spectrum of positions in such a way I suppose nothing I say is gonna change your opinion. But I don't consider myself to fall squarely into either of the 'camps' (a military thing I guess?) you identify.

This is very interesting. Not only must the Democratic caucus stop the war NOW they have to stay united on ALL issues? A large part of the reason that the Dems have the majority in both houses is because they broadened the pool of perspective candidates in order to win seats in close/republican leaning districts. Doesn't lend itself to a monolithic party line caucus full of yes men/women I'm sorry to say.

My recollection is that the Dems were elected to 'change the course' of the war in Iraq. Not to explicitly end it NOW. Following the election Bush made the right noises. "The Surge" was gonna break things open we were told. It's his last chance the pundits said. Well, the surge has failed. Public opinion has swung farther away from supporting our continued involvement there and come September Gen. Petreaus is gonna have nothing to say but "just give us a bit more time". And the public ain't gonna buy it. And the Republicans are gonna have to decide to stick with the lame duck Bush and the bloodletting or join with the Democrats to bring it to an end.

Furthering the divisions between Democrats isn't gonna help peal away Republicans from the pack. And many of the comments at blogs like TLC are having that effect. Sorry, but having people like Christopher and phidipides make references to brownshirts and fascist sheeple and say over and over again that the Democrats are worthless and are no different than the Republicans doesn't inspire me to continue the fight. When I read some of their (and now your) comments these days I don't know if it's them or peter until I reach the signiture line. And I know for sure that peter's intent is certainly not to inspire unity amongst the Democrats.

Regardless. Hope you feel better.

snark, Who would you support if the Democrats stood up to bu$h?

I think the Democrats.

Who do you think I will support if the Dems still cannot pass a bill ending the war?

I think the Democrats.

If you want strategy, it's the independents and moderate repukes that I feel we need to appeal to. They like strong leaders, we are risking losing their votes. The liberal Dems are still going to vote Dem.

Jeez, mcjoan had this at dkos:

Reid and his caucus need to understand that it's not just the bloggers' disappointment they are feeling--it's felt by each and every voter who voted for an end to the Iraq war last November. That's reflected in the series of new polls we've seen over the last week, including an LA Times/Bloomberg poll released yesterday that shows public approval of Congress the lowest level in over a decade.
He admitted to us that it was a mistake to raise expectations and that it wouldn't happen again.

That is a big wake up if you ask me. I still think I can't be that wrong for being pissed off.
And sorry if I disagree, but polls matter.

Right, they raised expectations because they talked a strong game but they couldn't pull it off. So the mistake, according to Reid, was getting peoples expectations up. Not the effort by the Democrats. I agree with that. People got their expectations up when they should not have. Fine. Reid accepts responsibility for it. But he believes they did the best they could under the circumstances. What he doesn't say is that he's gonna change what he thinks needs to be done because of the Dems bad poll numbers.

I still think I can't be that wrong for being pissed off.

I don't fault anyone for being angry. It's natural to be angry. But the rhetoric is hurtful to party unity. Party unity. Something you called for in you post! No. Nasty comments and schoolyard taunts aren't going to drive me into the arms of the Republicans but they might drive me away from active participation in the Democratic effort.

Right, and before anyone goes to the polls again Reid and Pelosi are gonna have the opportunity to try and pry some of the moderate republicans in Congress away from Bush come the Defense Appropriations bill in September.

Call me crazy but I think supporting the Dems and ripping the "stay the course" Republicans is a better way to appeal to Ind. & moderate Republicans than by running around dissing the Dems as spineless and no better than the Bush junta.

Of course, we can simply agree to disagree.

You call an 80-14 vote the best they could have done? Please.

Reid better start leading or get the fuck out of the way.

Oh come on! You know he did better than that. He sent a God damn bill to Bush and Bush vetoed it.

You guys are making this so much more difficult than it needs to be.

That's right, we are supposed to sit on our hands put our faith in our leaders. That certainly has been effective.

BTW, start leading or get the fuck out of the way, is a military term.
