Are We Turning the Corner, or Not?
So, what's really happening? The media are starting to emerge from their devilsfood-cakes-covered-with-Republican-icing cocoons, apparently realizing they may not be able to have their cake and eat it too. The Republicans are having second thoughts about holding the 2004 convention in NYC, now that the city is waking up to the fact that they have been screwed not once (9-11) not twice (failed promises of federal disaster bailout funding) but repeatedly (EPA lies, Iraq lies, deficit lies, clean air lies, state aid lies, education support lies, economic recovery lies...) Bush's polling numbers are falling like drunks at Mardi Gras. Terrorism in Iraq, non-existent before March 20, 2003, is rapidly escalating into an uncontrolled disaster for American (and other, suckered coalition) troops. Bush is running to the U.N. with his tail between his legs. Moderate Republicans in the Senate are starting to reclaim minds of their own. The Daily Show is getting bolder by the week. One liberal book after another are finding homes on the best-seller list.
And yet....
And yet....
The Congress just promised Bush every penny of his $87 Billion request for funding Halliburton (oops, sorry...IRAQ) for another few months. Bush continues his non-stop Tour of Lies across the nation with nary a whimper from the once-bold anti-war demonstrating masses. The CEO vs. average worker salary differential in most corporations continues to grow. Cities and states continue the transformation from paper to electronic ballots despite mounting evidence of potentially rampant voting fraud and manipulation by the Republican-owned vendors of electronic voting machines. Bush, who in his campaign speeches promised only continued federal surpluses, no matter what, is spearheading the most mind-numbing federal deficits no one would have dared to predict. Ever. Not a single senior Administration official has been brought to task for any of the incessant eruption of lies and deceit generated since day one.
And the winner is: Almost 70 percent of Americans STILL believe IRAQ was responsible for 9-11. That pretty much bottles up any hope of turning the corner any time soon.
